U15s Lose Opening Division 2 Game

Honley 5 Uppermill 1

Huddersfield U15s Sunday League - Division 2

Sunday 14th September 2014

Newsome High School

A slightly shorter journey than usual found us at Newsome High School, midway between Honley and Huddersfield. A fine setting for football, overlooking Huddersfield and beyond, with the folley above Almondbury in the near distance.

Good conditions for football too, with the weather overcast but dry. The excellent pitch, well befitting a sports college, was flat, firm and dry with short grass; much better than most we have encountered on our trips into Yorkshire.

A squad of 14, which included a couple of new faces, was being cheered on by injured skipper, Nick Price (ankle), who ran the line. UFC came into the game confident after their recent 4-3 success in the friendly against the 3Ds A team and a creditable draw against our strong U14 team.

Early on, a couple of good chances fell to Toby K with a header and Matt P with a keeper block; both agonisingly near misses. The first half was proving to be an even contest.

Honley, wearing a similar claret and blue kit to Burnley, also had their chances and eventually scored twice in eight minutes to take a two goal lead.

Uppermill, replied soon after however, with a splendid effort from Lewis Hallett. Travis and Lewis broke up a Honley move in the middle of the park and with the keeper off his line, Lewis took full advantage with a cracking shot from 30+ yards into the roof of the net. This turned out to be the goal of the game and an early contender for goal of the season!

After being 1-2 down at half time, the second half saw some decent chances for Uppermill, with a couple of headers from corners cleared off the line; both times with the Honley keeper well beaten. There was also some good quick passing play between Aaron, Ben & Toby and Lewis B down the left hand side.

However, the momentum eventually swung back to Honley who managed a further three second half goals; the last of these being a wicked deflection past the unfortunate Josh Brennan in goal who had made a couple of brave saves prior to this.

A disappointing start to the league season in a game that felt very winnable up until the latter part of the game. The score line certainly flattered Honley who also made the referee’s job increasingly more difficult with numerous fouls off the ball after play had moved on. A tough opener but let’s hope we can take an advantage in our next couple of games which are both at home.

Man of the match was Sam Hatherill
