Springhead JFC U12   2 v 2 Uppermill JFC U12 Blues

Mill took on their local rivals needing to bounce back from the previous weeks disappointing defeat. The game started with Springhead the stronger as Mill struggled to cope with the physical strength of their opponents and the conditions. From about the 10th minute though, Mill started to believe in themselves and started to get on top. On a heavy pitch Mill started to match Springhead physically and began to pass the ball really well. The midfield of Ben Lamb, Joe Snellin, Matty Kershaw, Charlie Mills and Izaac Gater started to play some lovely football and with Charlie Harper looking sharp up front, the Mill lads were pushing really hard for the opening goal.

When the goal came there was a lot of luck with it but they all count and it was certainly deserved. The scorer Charlie Harper fired in a shot that the Springhead keeper looked like he had covered until the ball hit a divot and bounced over him into the net. Mill continued to press for the second goal after that but the half finished 1-0 and after the shaky start myself and Charlie were happy with the first half performance.

The second half started as the first finished with Mill on top. Springhead had a few very big players and they were using their size to try and intimidate our lads. The referee seemed to think this was acceptable but I wasn’t so sure. The first ten minutes of the second half saw Mill miss a number of very good scoring opportunities which in the end proved to be very costly.

The heavens then opened and in a 5 minute spell the game changed with Mill switching off and Springhead scoring two quick goals to go 2-1 up. The pitch cut up very badly and this stopped the lads passing the ball as well as they had done in the first half. To their credit though they then spent the last fifteen minutes trying everything they could to get the equaliser. They were first to very tackle and second ball and kept trying to pass through Springhead.

As the game came to an end it looked like missed chances, the ref, the weather and five minutes of sloppy defending would cost them the game. We had a fair few chances to equalise but Springhead were defending very well and it took another slice of luck for the lads to get the point. The impressive Charlie Mills ran in on goal and hit a shot that squirmed through the hands of the Springhead keeper and into the net.

The game finished 2-2 and the lads can count themselves unlucky not to have won the game. I thought that after the first ten minutes their attitude was fantastic, the effort and heart they showed was very pleasing and in the first half some of the football they played was very impressive.

The back line of Thomas Bennison,  Luca Carey, Nathan Gallagher, Sam Johnson and Evan Parry were made to workhard against very strong and physical opposition and for the most part stuck to their task really well.  The midfield and forwards were pretty much dominant in a big test of their character.

Man of the match went to captain Ben Lamb who put in another fantastic performance. He was pushed all the way by Charlie Mills who was a constant threat to the Springhead defence.

East Manchester Junior Football League – League Cup Semi Final

Curzon Ashton JFL 0  v  4  Uppermill JFC U12 Blues

Curzon had beaten the Mill lads to the Autumn League Premiership title just before Christmas and I think fancied their chances against us after beating us 2-0 in our first game of the season. However apart from a 10 minute spell at the start of the game were out played and out fought by a determined Mill who have now won their first 3 games after Christmas, scoring 10 and conceding 0.

Mill started quickly and had the better of the first five minutes of this game, before Curzon pinned the lads back for a ten minute spell. Some strong defending ensured we didn’t concede and from then on Mill totally dominated the game to show the progress they continue to make as a team.

It was a surprise how long it took us to take the lead but deservedly we went ahead on 21 minutes when Matty Kershaw was sent through and he slotted the ball home.  Mill continued to dominate the game with the defence solid and the midfield dominating. Ben Killan up front was holding the ball up well and was a real handful for the Curzon defence.

A penalty was denied when Captain Ben Lamb was brought down but the referee claimed that Ben fell over his own feet. Shortly after though the goal of the game came when the excellent Joe Snellin hit a first time curler from 20 yards into the top corner, to give the lads a bit of breathing space.

The half finished 2-0 with the lads in control and in determined mood. We warned the lads that Curzon would come out fighting in the 2nd half but it was Mill who started well again and on 32 minutes Izaac Gater broke down the left and cut into the box before firing in a low drive from an acute angle. Another fantastic goal and no more than the lads deserved.

As the half progressed the defensive five of Luca Carey, Nathan Gallagher, Sam Johnson, William Rowland and Evan Parry were very rarely threatened although goalkeeper Thomas Bennison was called upon to make a couple of good saves, one especially that he tipped over from a strong shot.

The midfield of Ben Lamb, Joe Snellin and Matty Kershaw were totally on top of their opponents and never let the work rate drop as the game progressed. Izaac Gater and Charlie Mills got stronger as the game went on and caused the Curzon defence some problems with their strong running. On 38 minutes the fourth Mill goal arrived curtesy of Charlie Mills who was on hand to prod home at the back post.

Other opportunities came and went including a Ben Lamb header that hit the bar but the game ended at 4-0 and Mill through to the May final at the Tameside Stadium.

Overall a very pleasing performance against the current Premiership Champions and with two wins already against the two teams that beat us before Christmas the lads can feel pleased with their efforts. They now need to continue to work hard to ensure that they reach their potential over the coming weeks.

Man of the match went to Ben Lamb who delivered a captains performance. He was pushed closely by Luca Carey who didn’t put a foot wrong. All the lads though performed at the top of their game and are now showing a high level of consistency.
