Boys Team 1998
U15s V Batley
Uppermill Vs. Batley
Having previously watched Batley vs. Ossett we knew they would be a tough side (and after finding out afterwards they had a few key players missing in that game.) There was Emphasis on starting strong and getting tight to our men, Batley looked a big physical side and they could also play football, we were unfortunate to be missing a centre half from the defence who had Jake struggling with his knee and missing Josh Edozien with his pace and power And Nathan J just coming back into the fold but not yet signed on. Still with a more than capable squad we started out reverting back to a 4-4-2, as soon as the game started it was scrappy with neither team getting on the ball with Batley shifting the ball up to the strikers whenever they had the ball in defence and Mill not getting a foot on the ball resorting to losing the ball whenever they had it. First Big chance of the game came and was pretty frustrating as we know Jake can beat the defence with his kicking saw Nathan G and Kurt both go for the same ball that had beat the defence and with just the keeper to beat a heavy touch and the keeper collected, we changed back to 3-5-2 with Tom A sweeping and Alex dropping to RWB and Sam LWB. Batley collected the ball on the right and a ball into the box wasn’t dealt with and the first ball wasn’t cleared and then the second ball and then on the third try the away team worked the ball and struck into the corner to make it 0-1. From this point things only got worse for us with Harry hurting his back and Batley winning all of their battles in the middle and getting the ball forward with some nice football. Having a few half chances but most of these falling from corners and or free kicks outside the box with the keeper not really troubled. 5 minutes to go and 1-0 down and searching for an equaliser we had a free kick about 35 yards out I gave instruction to shoot at the keeper and follow the ball in hoping for a rebound but the keeper caught the ball and they launched a quick counter attack with our defence getting turned and not putting a proper tackle in saw the Batley forward finish from close after our defence out of character getting beaten on 4 occasions.
Half time and obviously not very happy we kept calm and I asked the lads who wanted to win this game and if we wanted to show up and be counted for. I spoke at length how we had to get closer in the centre of the park and when we won the ball keep it moving and get our passing game going, we also had to step up our game at the back but obviously with Harry and Jake struggling Harry came off and we had to revert back to 4-4-2.
We started the 2nd half exactly the same way we had the first very slow when we lost the ball we just seemed to jog back and not have that fight in us, Jake the Keeper who was Mom today kept us in the game with some good saves from close range and some excellent kicking off the floor and out of his hands. Trying to push forward and not tracking our men meant we had big gaps all over the field and when Batley had the ball they got forward quick with the striker going through and chipping on rushing Jake with a really nice goal. The Substitutions both having good games when they came on giving us a bit of hope but in all honesty up until the final 15 minutes we never ever showed up we reverted to a 3-4-3 and we soon got our reward as Nathan G who had worked hard but had no service got the ball on the move took a touch with his thigh and hit it into the corner, we got the ball but was only 10 minutes or so left. Jake had to come off as his knee was really hampering him. Pushing forward once again and with a spring in our step we soon got a 2nd with a bit of luck from nobody gambling on Tom S Free kick that went right through and into the corner. This would be the end of the game though and a deserved win for Batley but gutted with the worst performance I have seen since taking charge of this team last season.

U15s V Queensbury Cougars - Cup Match Report
Uppermill Vs. Queensbury Cougars-Cup
With a few weeks of bad weather and the lads not having a game for the past 2 weeks we knew we needed to play to keep our momentum going especially during the Dec/Jan period where a lot of games get postponed. We had a downpour of rain Fri night/Sat day and all games on Churchill had been called off on the Saturday so we had already moved fixture to the mill midweek. Having played Queensbury in our last league fixture we knew they weren’t a walk in the park and they had played a game in between. We had a full contingent this week with Tom A returning and Jake back from injury. We started with a 4-3-3 formation which we haven’t used this year because of a few lates. (Please guys turn up on time to ensure you don’t bench as we need to get a proper warm up so we start the game strong) Obviously the new formation didn’t give us much width and the Away side tried to play down our wings but Sam A in particular defending very well winning every tackle and header. We weren’t playing the best football we have played this season but on a pitch where studs where needed and most still wearing blades a lot of players slipping over at the vital moment meaning we couldn’t be as fluent as usual. We did however take control of the game and never really looked in danger with the away side trying to shoot from 30-40 yards and only 1 real chance coming from an unfortunate slip, Jake however made a good save. Kobe and Jack B having a lot of ball and linking up well either side of Greenwood. Kobe got the first goal with some good pressure and got in front of the goalkeeper to knock the ball home. The pressure stayed with us and Kobe again causing trouble for the defenders turned his man and then with just the keeper to beat got taken down from behind for a penalty. Tom S stepped up to take but the Queensbury keeper used his size and got down well to his right hand side with a strong wrist and turned the ball behind for a corner. A 10 minute period occurred where we seemed to step off the gas a little bit but then starting to push again Josh E marauded forward from right back beating about 3 men with a powerful run and then finished well from a tight angle. A couple more chances came and Nathan G had a shot which 9/10 times would have gone in saved well by the keeper.
Halftime and we knew we would have to play much better as Queensbury where creating a few chances and another goal would probably be enough to see us through. We also spoke about how a few lads attitudes to us and their fellow players need to be improved and hands in the air and huffing and puffing didn’t help anybody only made us look bad.
Second half we reverted back to our usual formation and looked stronger Jack and Kobe after having great first half’s came off to give them a little break while Harry came off due to his knee hurting. Sam and Josh told to squeeze up the field and give us some width with their pace and power, Kurt came on Upfront Alex in the middle and then Tom A sweeper. Again we didn’t carve out much in the opening 10 but had lots of the ball, a lot of our play came down the left and Sam A driving the ball in behind their fullback on numerous occasions. A number of good chances then fell with Sam Clipping the outside of the far post and Kurt slipping and couldn’t get to what would have been a simple tap in after the keeper parried. Tom S hit the bar and there keeper made a couple of good saves at his near post. The away team also having a bit of freedom with their midfielder picking up the ball to drive only to see the final ball cut out or the shot go wide. Kurt grabbed our 3rd after he created some space in the box and some nice 1-2 football. With the score line now 3-0 and knowing it could have been 6 or 7 we seemed to take our foot off the gas and in the last 15 the away side certainly had a few good chances, first a double mistake trying to turn instead of easy pass and then a pass that was wayward led to a loose ball and a great finish from there attacker. At 3-1 they definitely had a confidence boost and then sloppy defending trying to dribble out of our box led to firstly a great tackle from George R then a top save from Jake. Realising we had to step it up we bombarded forward leaving us open at the back and then a bad final ball saw them break and a tracking back Tom S skewed the ball into his own net which was unfortunate as he had worked hard to get back.
This turned out to be the last kick of the game and Ref had admitted he should of blown 2 minutes prior!! In Summary another win and hopefully build on a good cup run but we need to up the anti especially by not taking our foot off the pedal when cruising.
